Care Vanda's Seedlings

Vanda orchids are slow-growing epiphytic orchids that bloom in a wide range of hues.
They are considered warmth-loving orchids and will not tolerate temperatures below 50 degrees
Fahrenheit. Vanda orchids are smaller in stature than most orchids,
reaching only 2 feet in height at 8 years of age.
Once removed from their reproductive flasks, they are planted into nursery pots to mature.

  1. 1. Plant your vanda seedlings in small 2 to 3-inch diameter nursery pots filled with coarse orchid medium designed for epiphytic orchids.
  2. 2. Provide a bright southern sunlight exposure for your vanda seedlings for a minimum of six hours per day. In very sunny rooms or hot climates keep the seedlings in bright indirect sunlight but not direct sun. Given a choice, provide morning sun and afternoon shade.
  3. 3. Water your vanda seedlings once or twice a week to keep the medium lightly moist at the bottom but allowing the top 1/2 inch of medium to dry slightly between waterings. Drench the pot, roots and medium with tepid water, never cold, by holding under a gently flowing tap. Allow all excess water to drain through the pot. Mist your vanda orchid seedlings daily with distilled water to heighten the ambient humidity and increase the vigor of the plants.
  4. 4. Provide ambient temperatures for your vanda seedlings of 65 degrees Fahrenheit overnight and 75 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. Avoid ambient temperature dips to 45 degrees or below as this will disrupt the vanda's growth or kill the plant. They are warmth-loving orchids and should be kept away from cool drafts and air conditioning vents.
  5. 5. Feed your vanda seedlings with a highly diluted water-soluble orchid plant food with a guaranteed analysis of 30-10-10. Feed the seedlings once a month at half of the package recommended dose of fertilizer. Mix with water and pour over the roots and planting medium, allowing the excess to drain away. Err on the side of less fertilizer if in doubt, not more.
